1930: Graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School, Brooklyn, New York
1934: Graduated from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, New York, with major in English and minor in Education
1934-35: Worked for the Conservation Civilian Corps (CCC), along with brother Max, in Death Valley, CA (as part of road construction gang) and the Montana National Park (felling trees burned in forest fires)
1935-1936: Teacher of Remedial Reading, Works Project Administration (WPA), New York City
1937-1938: Grammar School Teacher, Arroyo, Puerto Rico
1938-1940: Adult Education Teacher, WPA, New York City; taught English to foreign-born. Also worked on the WPA Federal Writers Project (“New York City Guide Book”)
